How Does PAC2PAC Work?

Optimal Recycling Loop for Plastic Packaging

We make MORE out of packaging.

Today, most plastic packaging ends up in incineration plants – but it doesn’t have to be this way! As a long-standing manufacturer of packaging solutions, we – BACHMANN Group –
asked ourselves: how can we create the perfect recycling loop for PET packaging? The result is our PAC2PAC system, which allows us to transform used plastic packaging into equivalent new packaging using thermoforming.

This creates a closed cycle where used packaging is turned back into new packaging – resource-efficient and sustainable.

Filling Selling PET Packaging

Our clients fill and sell our PET packaging.

Usage

The end customer consumes the contents.

Decontamination

We decontaminate the flakes and extrude them into a mono-recycling sheet.

Disposal

The used packaging is disposed of in our collection bag.

Shredding and washing

The sorted packaging is subsequently shredded into flakes and washed.

Sorting with AI

The collection bags are sorted by material type, leveraging infrared technology, optical object recognition, and artificial intelligence.

As part of the collaboration project, Sesotec took on the crucial role of sensor-based sorting of food and non-food PET material from the Swiss plastic collection bags.

Roles/Responsibilities of the Company:

  • Bale breaking
  • Article sorting using VARISORT+ UNITY with OBJECT-AI technology
  • Manual analyses to ensure compliance with food and non-food content limits
  • Sorting after the washing process with the FLAKE PURIFIER+
  • Material purity analysis with the FLAKE SCAN

Starlinger Viscotec supports the PAC2PAC project with years of expertise in building plastic recycling plants. With the help of our machines, rPET is perfectly cleaned and processed back into film, allowing packaging to be made from packaging again.

  • Cleaning of rPET and reprocessing into film
  • Producing packaging from packaging

Krones Recycling GmbH provides turnkey solutions for plastic recycling – for PET, PE, PP, and PS.

Roles/Responsibilities of the Company:

  • Provision of turnkey solutions for plastic recycling – for PET, PE, PP, and PS
  • Shredding and washing of PET trays
  • Ability to process PET mixed materials from mono- and multilayer trays as well as bottles back into food-grade quality products.
